100 Word Challenge: Fear

Tara over at Thin Spiral Notebook gave us the word Fear for our 100 Word Challenge this week.  I decided to try my hand at some poetry again.  Let me know what you think and be sure to check out other great responses via the link above or clicking on the badge below.

Heartbeat skittering
Like leaves on the wind
Eyes wide
But seeing little
Muscles tighten
Like springs waiting to snap
Breathing shallow
Mere sips of air.

Shadows flicker
Like flames dancing in the gloom
Subtle movement
Not clearly seen
Voices whisper
Like ghosts in the mind
Cobwebs cling
Unseen remnants on the skin.

Darkness grows
Like a blight upon the soul
Danger lurks
In hidden spaces
Death lingers
Like a savior among the afflicted
Doubt expands
Exponential at birth.

Unknown looms
Like vultures circling
Questions creep
Insidious in their insistence
Illusions erode
Like claws uprooting earth
Specters haunt
Until souls collapse.
