Perceptions, Nerves, and Acorns

PerceptionsPerception-3

I can’t believe my son turned six this year. It doesn’t seem like he should be that old. I don’t feel that old. It’s odd how this perception thing works, isn’t it? I shake my head at the memes on Facebook and such talking about stuff 20-30 years ago, and I’m over here thinking they’re referring to the 1970s. But, no, they’re referring to things I did in junior high and high school. Don’t get me wrong, I am very aware—sometimes too aware—of how fast time passes. It’s just somehow in my head I’m not getting older, so my son shouldn’t get older either. Maybe this is a by-product of playing in science fiction universes too much. Oh well. If that’s the worst that happens, I’ll take it.

Nerves

I’ve decided nerves are weird things. As in the little fibers that run through our bodies and give our brains control of our bodies. See, I managed to end up with cubital tunnel syndrome in my left elbow. What’s that? Same thing as carpal tunnel syndrome, only it thSBAT97NRhappens in the elbow instead of the wrist. What I find interesting about this whole thing is how the sensations change in my elbow. I go from feeling like there’s a constant bee sting in my elbow to nothing to you-just-stomped-on-a-bare-nerve pain. I mean, how does this change so much when I don’t even move sometimes? Here’s to hoping this heals and goes away soon.

Acorns

Oh, my goodness, are there acorns on my deck. I have an oak tree growing off the side of my deck and this thing has been putting out acorns like no one’s business this year. I’d be willing to bet I have close to five gallons worth of acorns on my deck alone. Now, before you go on about how big of an area this really is, I’d estimate my deck is about ten feet by fourteen feet or so. That’s all. And those five gallons don’t count the acorns that acorn-autumn-blur-247553.jpgfell in the plants or are wedged in the cracks between the decking boards. I know there’s an old wives’ tale about the more acorns there are, the harsher the winter we’ll experience. If that’s the case, here’s your warning now—stock up because this’ll be one of the worst winters in a long time.

  1. This is acorn-y comment, and I don’t want to get on your nerves, but next time you think about how fast time flies, it will be because you have to sign him up for driver’s ed. And you will say, no way he’s waaaaay too young for that.
