Navitis

Tara over at Thin Spiral Notebook gave us a pretty wide open prompt this week. Hence my squeaking it in just under the wire once again. But, with a word like beauty, where do you begin? Well, I give you…

Such a thing we have sought,
a perfection that cannot exist.
Yet wars have been fought
across centuries and countries
over this nebulous thing
that changes from day to day.

We hold it up, this thing undefined
and condemn any who fail
to meet this unattainable goal.
A thing we violate and desecrate
our very beings to fit a fleeting whim
of what we think we see.

This thing we worship, yet know not,
underlies our every thought,
consuming our resources
better spent on worthier things.
Still we give chase to this ephemeral thing
that we’ve had inside all along.

Be sure to stop by Thin Spiral Notebook and read other wonderful responses to this prompt!
