Patience

It’s been a while since I participated in Tara’s 100 Word Challenge over at Thin Spiral Notebook, which is too bad because I love this prompt. So I’m excited I had time to get back to it this week. We were given the word patience and exactly 100 words. Here’s my response:

That niggling word bandied about.
The oft repeated admonishment
of frenzied parents
to rambunctious spawn
celebrating their innocence
oblivious to the world’s
harsher realities.

That four-letter word,
though in truth it is more,
few wish to hear
much less exercise,
until another waits on them.

Dreary delays get hard,
uncertainty harder still,
when forced to practice
what is so often preached
as circumstances go spinning
beyond all control.

Yet peace will come
when practiced long enough
to don it like an old shirt
comfortable and worn,
a favorite garment
never fitting quite right
but never willing to let it go.
