Astrophysics in Action

I know, I know. I promised Random Sunday yesterday. But here it’s Tuesday and I don’t have it yet. We’ll do Random Sunday on Wednesday. Promise. Illness and work and all will not bar me from having it out to you then. In the mean time, I do have a quick little treat for you. My response to Tara Roberts’ 100 Word Challenge prompt. This week the word was escape. Between that and all the How the Universe Works I’ve been watching with my son, I give you:

Astrophysics in Action

His vessel drifted near the event horizon of the supermassive black hole, just on the edgeblack-hole-92358_640.jpg of not being able to escape from the intense gravitational field. His telemetry indicated he might drift too close at any moment.

“That’s one thing astrophysics got right. We can get pretty damned close to the supermassives without getting pulled in.”

His voice sounded loud in the otherwise silent ship. The computers blinked away as they studied the activity at the event horizon. Then a different light came on.

“I guess we’ll find out what happens when a human being crosses the event horizon.”
