Broken Aro by Jen Wylie

Let me start off this book review by saying I received a free copy of Broken Aro by Jen Wylie in exchange for an honest review.

Now that is out of the way, I can get into the book review.  Overall, I really enjoyed Broken Aro by Jen Wylie.  I read the entire thing in one evening, partly because my son was out camping with my parents and the house was quiet and mostly because it is an engaging story.

Here are the things I really enjoyed about the book.  I think the pacing of the story in general is well done.  It moves fast enough to be interesting but not so fast as to feel like I was getting lost in the story.  I also think the reveals/secrets/whatever you want to call them, are timed well.  Little nuggets of critical information are doled out just often enough to keep things lively.  The tension built between the characters is excellent.  I almost squirmed a time or two with the discomfort of the situation.  Finally, I also loved the character growth in the story.  There is plenty of room for more growth in the rest of the series and the characters are not the same people they were when they started in this book.

There were a few things I did struggle with a little.  First, and perhaps my biggest, is that there were some typos in the book.  Now, I have read that these are in the process of being fixed.  So, once that is done, this will no longer be an issue.  My next issue is that Aro, the main protagonist, seems a little flat at first.  She does grow nicely into a more interesting character with depth.  She just does not come off as that interesting at first.  Finally, and I will not give away too much here as I do not want to spoil anything, there is a death scene that seemed a bit rushed to me.  If you want to know more about my thoughts on this scene, message me as I do not want to spoil the story for anyone.

Again, I have to say that I really did like this story, and have the next books in the series marked on my to read list.  It is a fun, whirlwind of an adventure that throws in interesting twists on the typical fantasy fare.  I would certainly recommend you take a look at this book.
